Here's the info!...
We are a firm of architects based in East London, and we recently worked with Waltham Forest on the relaunch of Wood Street Indoor Market, a charming but unloved indoor market. After only 4 months the market has been transformed and now hosts 21 new shops and is a much more popular place to visit.
We are now coordinating a big and exciting project, for which we are looking for new traders:
Walthamstow Market is a famous East-London street market, and is in fact the longest outdoor street market in Europe! The market is treasured for its fruit and veg, household goods and clothes, and the council are just now completing a huge physical regeneration scheme including new electricity points and lights, along the whole 1km length of the pedestrianised street market. The market has also received fresh new branding and a dedicated new website.
The council is now looking to add to this regeneration by devoting one end of the market to be a ‘Hub’ for new traders. This new stretch of market will be part of Walthamstow Market but will be called 'Saturdays at St James Street'.
This is an incredible project to be involved in, as we can see the huge potential in the site, the area and the community, at the devoted location at the St James Street end of the Market. The area is characterised by a neighbourly-feel and has some of the most popular cafes and restaurants. With a history of a really successful French Market, and a popular Sunday Farmer’s Market, the current cafés and restaurants are really keen to see new and different stalls in this area, so would be very welcoming to new traders. This section of the street also benefits from being in a conservation area, with attractive buildings surrounding the market.
Rather than just find stalls that will come and go, we’re after a core group of traders to get in at the beginning, become founding members and work with us to help the market grow. We imagine these new stalls will be formed of street food, ethnic food, vintage, retro, up-cycling, craft, art and gifts. In fact we are looking for anything that keeps things fresh and exciting! But it will be these regular stallholders (you!) that will give the market its character and make it the destination for a substantial part of locals’ weekly shopping.
Our first market is scheduled for Saturday 31st March, running each Saturday from then on, from 8am to 5pm. This is your opportunity to get in early and to be featured in extensive council-funded pre-launch marketing and press coverage, and to become part of our collective.
The council is also offering the incentive of 3 MONTHS FREE-RENT, and a following 3 months half price rent, totaling 12 Saturdays free rent, and 12 weekends half price, in order to lure really excellent stall-holders and make sure the launch is of excellent quality. This is a one-off offer, not to be repeated, so it is a risk-free chance to join the Market and hopefully stay in the long term. For this reason the application process is competitive, and we will be choosing the highest quality of stalls, so you can be assured of a high-quality market.
The council is focusing its efforts on a new Saturday Market at St. James Street, but is also offering free rent for the other Market days, Tuesday to Saturday, if you are interested please tick the appropriate box in the application form.
The Information Pack, which can be downloaded here, has all the details on the practicalities of the market, the location and our vision.
