EMD Cinema
The Council has agreed to buy the old cinema in Hoe Street Walthamstow, now a bar and arts venue, for £2.8m. The current owners cannot make it viable within planning, environmental requirements and the constraints of the historic status of the building.
The Council will then spend a further £17m on refurbishment and lease it to the Soho theatre, a registered charity and social enterprise, who have promised to put on year-long cultural events. The Council are hoping that the building will generate income for the borough and add to the night-time economy. It is planned to be finished in 2021.
Leyton Cricket Ground
The Council has agreed to provide just over half the £950,000 needed to develop the sports hall at Leyton Cricket Ground to become an urban cricket hub, with the refurbishment of the George Mitchell Arts Centre to provide community use.
This project is to be speeded up to finish this summer in time for the Cricket World Cup.
