Dear All,
Welcome to the Civic Society's latest email bulletin to highlight upcoming events and news. It has been another strange year which has given us limited opportunities to meet in person, but I hope you will be able to celebrate this Christmas with friends and family and I wish you all the best for 2022, whatever it may bring.
Civic Society Criteria for Supporting/Opposing Future Developments in Waltham Forest
The last stage of consultation on Waltham Forest Council's Local Plan, which identifies 65 major development sites across the borough (and the policies that will define the scale/shape/height of these developments) will finally close on 14th January. We wanted to define the Civic Society's position on future developments, wherever they are proposed in the borough, so that we have a set of criteria we can apply in opposing or supporting these developments. We have taken the government's own National Model Design Code as our starting point and our criteria are outlined in the attached document - please let us know if you have your own views/opinions on these.
Civic Society AGM on Thursday 27th January at 7.30pm
Due to Covid and other difficulties the Civic Society hasn't been able to hold an AGM for two years, however we have now agreed a firm date for our next AGM which will be on Thursday 27th January at 7.30pm via Zoom. Mike Fox, the borough Conservation Officer, will be our speaker and will be talking about the current challenges to conservation in the borough at a time of huge development pressures. Please look out for the Zoom link which will be sent out in January.
Membership Renewals
We hope you have enjoyed being a member of the Civic Society during the last year and have been able to take part in some of our all-member events. Our new membership year began in September - membership renewal reminders have been rather delayed this year however we will be sending out renewal forms shortly and we hope you will wish to re-join the society. Please note that you can now renew electronically if you wish - details of how to do so are on the renewal form.
50th Anniversary Year
2022 will be the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Civic Society and we have been making plans for how to celebrate this significant milestone! We are planning to hold a touring photo exhibition showing the enormous changes in Waltham Forest over the last 50 years, together with a series of walks in different parts of the borough. We are also intending to hold a celebratory meal in the summer when Covid concerns will hopefully have receded - details of all events will be publicised next year.
I am also including link to Adrian Stannard's blog Waltham Forest - Our Community which includes latest news about planning and developments in the borough: http://www.wfoc.blogspot.com/
Take care and best wishes,
Jane Sterland
