Wood Street Area Action Plan

January 2012

Before Christmas plans were published for the Wood Street Area Action Plan (AAP). Unfortunately they were displayed in Wood Street library which was closed for Christmas so residents were unable to view them. After lobbying by the Civic Society it has been agreed the plans will remain on display until the 24th February.

On the 15th February at 7pm the Wood Street Community Forum meeting will be held in St Gabriel's Church Hall , Havant Road, E17 3JF and will include items about the Wood Street regeneration and the AAP.

For more information about the AAP proposals follow this link.

December 2011
AAP Consultation panels placed in Wood Street Library just before Christmas with a closing date for responses as the 3rd January 2012. Unfortunately the Library was closed over christmas so the public were unable to view the exhibition.

The Civic Society has welcomed parts of the AAP but feels too much emphasis is placed on building new housing rather than keeping existing industrial sites which generate jobs. As there is a chronic shortage of Primary School places in Walthamstow it makes no sense to increase housing putting even more pressure on the schools.

September 2011
Work starts on removing the existing 12 year old street lights and replacing them with modern ones with two coloured tubes on each pole. In addition moving images are projected onto the pavement in various places.

August 2011
Plaza completed and opened to the public.

January 2011
Work starts on creating the Plaza. The paving is replaced from Wood Street station to Whipps Cross roundabout creating parking spaces at the expense of pavement width.

October 2010
Plans were announced for spending £1.8m of Traffic for London (TfL) money  on improving the precinct and renaming it the Plaza and for replacing the street lights, upgrading the paving and calming the traffic.
